Everybody got their something

If you had Frank Sinatra as your godfather, there must be something special about you. Singer and soulful lady Nikka Costa has got something special ,she’s got soul and unforgeable funk. Although she’s fairly unknown, she’s got some great songs in her repertoire. If I don’t feel like working – which is mostly the case – her songs can certainly help the workflow. So check out “Everybody got their something” which is the title-track of her 2001 album. The style of the song kinda makes me think of Lucy Pearl, but maybe that’s just me. There’s also an acoustic version of the song, that she did for Rolling Stone magazine. Enjoy!

Fuck you

I’ve been wanting to post this next track ever since it came out. But I decided to wait for the release of the music video to come out.

I must say, this track has been on repeat constantly, I haven’t gone a day without listening -while singing along out loud – to this awesome track. Honestly and with all due respect, Lily Allen can go fuck herself, she’s got nothing on Cee Lo Green, apart from her third nipple that is. There isn’t much to say about this, other than that this track is highly addictive.. So check it out and enjoy.

Your Summer Song

Exile - who threw a 12″ inch into my hands at Dourfestival last year – has now made a remix of “Your Summer Song” which was on his last album called Radio. For this wonderful remix, he invited the lovely J. Mitchell onto the track. It ads a wonderful vibe to the track, I’m loving the video as well. So head outside, turn the volume open and enjoy this wonderful piece of music.

Song or Sample?

A quick post, cause I’ve still got quite a few exams to make..

After reading Kon & Amir‘s article about the 50 greatest Hip-hop-samples of all time, I kept on listening to some of the samples. One of those samples is the one used for the T.R.O.Y. (The reminisce over you) track from Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth it’s a tribute to their fallen friend, Trouble T-Roy and most definitely their best track in my humble opinion.

The sampled track is from the great Saxophonist and musician Tom Scott, it’s called Today, and it’s an awesome song with an awesome solo in it. So here’s the thing, I can’t make up my mind, over which of the two tracks is the best, so I’ll let you guys decide, check out the two tracks here below, and let me know which one you dig the most. Enjoy!

The Sample: Tom Scott – Today

The Song:  Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth – The Reminisce over you  (T.R.O.Y.)

PS: Have some patience with the sample, it takes a while before the song reaches its climax.

Original vs. Cover: Mr. Blue Sky

Quite a dilemma here, I love listening to Mr. Blue Sky, the song has been covered by many and raped by Lily Allen. The original was released in 1978 by ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) and my favourite cover was performed live by Mayer Hawthorne in 2009 at the KCRW radio. The song also features a vocoded chorus which was really awesome back then and actually still is now, when it’s not being done by a pathetic R&B-singer that is. A nice fact, at the end of the song on the record you can hear “Please turn me over” sung with a heavy vocoder on it.

Check the two videos and vote for your favourite! Enjoy!

Oh sweet soul

Yesterday this great soulartist was featured with a free track on Mashable‘s Free Music Monday post. In this topic, they offer 10 free downloads in honor of the #musicmonday tradition on Twitter, one song that I kept playing, was the one from Orly.

Orly is an Australian artist, who moved to Manhattan and released her debut album in 2009. It looks like she’s of to a good start, because she’s already playing in New York’s most popular venues. The track is called “Why”, it’s a combination of soul and jazz, Orly has a compelling voice, you’d regret it if you don’t download this one. Enjoy!

ORLY – WHY (right-click and press “save as”)

If you want to hear more from her, buy it on iTunes via this link, I’d recommend “Sit Back”.

Love conversation

It’s Saturday, so to help you all de-stress, I’ve chosen a track which was released back in February on Brownswood recordings, which some of us may now from the man behind the label, Gilles Peterson known from his Worldwide show on the BBC1.

The tune I’ve chosen to accompany this sunny day, is Love Conversation of the album Black Magic by José James. The track features Jordana de Lovely, who has a lovely voice (no pun intended). I hope some of you will like this sweet and soulful track, enjoy!
