I want your garbage!

I stumbled upon this amazing Parisian artist called Bernard Pras.

Pras takes everything he can find from garbage to scrap, and uses it to replicate famous and infamous paintings. It’s an inspiring concept and I must say that I’m quite impressed with the accuracy of the depiction of paintings by Dali, Ensor, Munch, Warhol, Monet and many others.  But other than paintings, he has a whole bunch of cartoon heroes (or graphic novels for the nitwits), statues and other stuff too. He’s been very busy, so be sure to check out his website, since it contains works made by him which date back to 1997. But meanwhile, enjoy a few of his masterpieces in the slideshow below. Enjoy!

Don’t you hate it when a hamster steals your car and uses it in a music video?

Some of you may have seen this one, but to those isolated from TV at the moment, check out this great new ad by Kia.

To promote their latest model called “Soul” they took a classic Hiphop track and gave it a twist. And what better way to do that than to use some rapping hamsters with – I’ve gotta give it to them –  some funky moves. The rapping hamsters aren’t really hamsters, they’re actually Black Sheep. If the group Black Sheep (part of the Native Tongues with ATCQ, De La Soul & The Jungle Brothers) doesn’t ring a bell, think of the phrase “engine engine number 9, on the New York transit line, if my train goes off the track, pick it up, pick it up, pick it up” used in thousands of Hiphop and – unfortunately also – R&B-tracks. That same line is also from the track used in the ad, it’s called “The Choice is Yours” and it’s a personal favorite of mine. So check it out, the ad and the original music video, both swell as hell. Enjoy!

And here’s the original Black Sheep – The choice is yours

Am I Blu(e)

Whether you’re an early bird or not, waking up with this smooth track is always great. Just a quick post here, bringing you the smoothness brought by Blu, but he’s not the only one bringing the smoothness on this track. The sample is of course from the song Am I Blue by Billie Holiday, which I’ve listened to even more than the song by Blu, but still, it’s a masterpiece and it’s called Amnesia, I’d recommend you check out the sample first if you’re not familiar with it, it makes the song Blu made, even better.

The song is one of the masterpieces from the HerFavoriteColo(u)r mixtape (released back in Februari 09), which is still up for free, so if you like the track, don’t forget to download the mixtape here below! Enjoy!

Seize the Day

-

Just watched “Paris” by Cédric Klapisch for my french exam, I liked it, I actually loved it. The movie is great, featuring Romain Duris, who also played in Les Poupées Russes, my favorite french movie. The soundtracks are great, One song in particular is amazing, it’s called “Seize The Day” and it’s a second version from “Que Sera” by Wax Tailor. I’m really fond of it because of the nice mellow beat, the smooth scratches and last but certainly not least the fragile yet beautiful voice from Charlotte Savary. Truly a great track to vibe too and forget all the stress. Enjoy my dear readers.

Next Level: Arts & Crafts (part three)

The last of three.

Mundo de Papel, or World of Paper, is an advertisement spot made by CRU DE LADIES, who made the clip for BBDO Mexico. The ad itself is about Scribe, a brand of notepads, it’s a nice clip, check out if you like it as well.. Enjoy!

Dam(n) Funk

I guess a lot of you have already heard about Dam-Funk, most of you will know him from the mirrors track, and if you haven’t heard of him, check that video first.

Cause now Stonesthrow has released one of his tracks for free on their website, the title is a mouthful though, it’s called “HOW U GON FU*K AROUND AND CHOOSE A BUSTA (OVER A REAL GANGSTA)?”. The track itself is awesome, it’s funky and it’ll blow you away like most of his tracks. So listen/download and Enjoy!

Brain Farm

Like a lot of people, I love HD films and High-fps videos always amaze me. So imagine how blown away I was by this production house called BRAIN FARM. Brain Farm is specialized in aerial cinematography and capturing and producing the highest end HD digital cinema. They use the Phantom Camera, which is one of the most advanced cameras in the world. Combine that with a stabilization system that was normally used by the U.S. army to launch missiles, and you’ve got yourself some awesome imagery. Snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, but also wildlife and awesome panoramas,if it’s amazing, chances are great that they’re behind it. Brain Farm has been working with Quicksilver, National Geographic and ESPN, to name a few.

So check out the three videos below, the first shows you some amazing images, the other two are a commercial and a quicksilver production. Enjoy!

Song or Sample?

A quick post, cause I’ve still got quite a few exams to make..

After reading Kon & Amir‘s article about the 50 greatest Hip-hop-samples of all time, I kept on listening to some of the samples. One of those samples is the one used for the T.R.O.Y. (The reminisce over you) track from Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth it’s a tribute to their fallen friend, Trouble T-Roy and most definitely their best track in my humble opinion.

The sampled track is from the great Saxophonist and musician Tom Scott, it’s called Today, and it’s an awesome song with an awesome solo in it. So here’s the thing, I can’t make up my mind, over which of the two tracks is the best, so I’ll let you guys decide, check out the two tracks here below, and let me know which one you dig the most. Enjoy!

The Sample: Tom Scott – Today

The Song:  Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth – The Reminisce over you  (T.R.O.Y.)

PS: Have some patience with the sample, it takes a while before the song reaches its climax.

Original vs. Cover: Mr. Blue Sky

Quite a dilemma here, I love listening to Mr. Blue Sky, the song has been covered by many and raped by Lily Allen. The original was released in 1978 by ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) and my favourite cover was performed live by Mayer Hawthorne in 2009 at the KCRW radio. The song also features a vocoded chorus which was really awesome back then and actually still is now, when it’s not being done by a pathetic R&B-singer that is. A nice fact, at the end of the song on the record you can hear “Please turn me over” sung with a heavy vocoder on it.

Check the two videos and vote for your favourite! Enjoy!

The Cover (ELO)

The Original (Mayer Hawthorne):

All eyes on turntablism

Apparently not suited for Pirates.

I just discovered this video made by software company Inklen (the creators of MixEmergency), which is quite obviously an April Fools’ joke. It’s about their so called new product called eyeCanDJ, even if you’re not a deejay, check out the video, it’s hilarious.

On the other hand Inklen as a company is partly responsible for the sad evolution of DJ to iPhone-DJ with their app called ToneTable. Isn’t delay-scratching as ridiculous as eye-scratching? That’s for you to decide.

“I was just getting sick to death, breaking my back, carrying this pair of control-cd’s with me to every gig”

PS: I apologize for the obvious pun in the title, couldn’t resist
