Original vs. Cover: Mr. Blue Sky

Quite a dilemma here, I love listening to Mr. Blue Sky, the song has been covered by many and raped by Lily Allen. The original was released in 1978 by ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) and my favourite cover was performed live by Mayer Hawthorne in 2009 at the KCRW radio. The song also features a vocoded chorus which was really awesome back then and actually still is now, when it’s not being done by a pathetic R&B-singer that is. A nice fact, at the end of the song on the record you can hear “Please turn me over” sung with a heavy vocoder on it.

Check the two videos and vote for your favourite! Enjoy!

The Cover (ELO)

The Original (Mayer Hawthorne):

I left my heart in San Francisco

Well, I haven’t, but Mayer Hawthorne seems to have lost his there.

If you hadn’t heard about Mayer’s new clip, be sure to check it out here. This cover of one of Tony Bennet‘s most popular songs has been redone quite nicely. Hard to compete with others who covered the song as well, be sure to check out Dean Martin‘s version and Frank Sinatra‘s version. It’s definitely been in heavy rotation here, very mellow and soothing, Enjoy.

be sure to let me know which of the four versions you’ve enjoyed the most.
